Dr. Know-No

They say she was born with her mouth closed
and her eyes wide open.

She is the kind of woman who drinks tea with ghosts
and alphabetizes her grief by author, not title.

She speaks in footnotes and moonlight.

Her name is Know-No,
but not for disapproval-
for discernment.
She knows but does not say.
She sees but waits for you to see it too.

She carries a satchel of quiet things:
chapters unwritten,

recipes forgotten,
names of women history tried to lose.

Her fingers are always cold.
Not because she's lifeless,
but because she's touched the other side
and brought back the evidence in her palms.

Children follow her
and dogs sit at her feet,
but men forget her
because she will not explain herself.

She is the Listener.
She is the Last Witness.
She is my shadow, my spine,
my breath when I forget how to breathe.

I call her Dr. Know-No.
But maybe she was a saint once.
Or a scientist.

Or a library that burned down
and came back as a woman.

Analysis Available

The poem 'Dr. Know-No' is a thoughtful exploration of a woman's enigmatic character, blending mysticism with intellectual depth. It uses vivid imagery and a contemplative tone to convey the subject's wisdom and mystery, offering a nuanced portrayal that resonates emotionally.

Strengths

  • The poem employs striking imagery, such as 'drinks tea with ghosts' and 'alphabetizes her grief by author, not title,' which vividly captures the subject's unique character.
  • The use of metaphor and personification, like 'a satchel of quiet things' and 'a library that burned down and came back as a woman,' enriches the poem's depth and complexity.
  • The poem's tone is consistent and evocative, particularly in lines like 'She speaks in footnotes and moonlight,' which convey a sense of ethereal wisdom.

Areas for Improvement

  • The poem's structure lacks variation, with a free verse form that might benefit from more deliberate line breaks or stanza organization to enhance rhythm and emphasis.
  • Some phrases, such as 'she will not explain herself,' feel more prosaic and could be refined to match the poem's otherwise lyrical quality.

Imagery

The poem is rich in visual language, using metaphors like 'drinks tea with ghosts' to evoke a sense of otherworldliness. The imagery of 'alphabetizes her grief by author, not title' cleverly conveys the subject's analytical nature. Sensory details, such as 'fingers are always cold' and 'brought back the evidence in her palms,' create a tactile connection to the mystical elements of her character.

Structure

The poem is written in free verse, with no consistent meter or rhyme scheme, which suits its introspective and narrative style. However, the lack of structured stanzas or varied line lengths can make the poem feel rhythmically flat at times. Strategic line breaks, such as after 'She carries a satchel of quiet things,' help to emphasize key ideas but could be more consistently applied.

Language & Craft

The diction is carefully chosen to reflect the subject's enigmatic nature, with words like 'discernment,' 'Listener,' and 'Last Witness' contributing to the poem's tone of reverence and mystery. Alliteration is subtly used in phrases like 'satchel of quiet things,' enhancing the poem's musicality. The voice is contemplative, maintaining a balance between admiration and introspection.

Emotional Impact

The poem successfully evokes a sense of wonder and admiration for the subject, creating an emotional resonance through its portrayal of wisdom and mystery. Lines like 'my breath when I forget how to breathe' convey a deep personal connection, enhancing the poem's emotional depth and ability to move the reader.
