Knot

Image for Knot

Not a wall -
but memory insulation.
Each room hosts life;
its grasp inextricable
its air warmly familiar
and yet freshly tense.

Not a house -
not bills, bricks, tools or taxes
but the carpet on which little feet sprouted
in rainy evenings and paddling pool splashes.
It is the haven that I learned to call mine;
the home to which I have given my time.

A knot lies in the depths of my frail heart.
It wraps around in a perfect stream of art.
Blood runs through in thick, warm rushes
dyeing the thread maroon as it touches
the sparking, sacred fabric that lives;
fragile and absorbent and quietly big.

But in haste it has unravelled

as water bursts
from what’s now frigid and hollow.

When stability shatters from
under your feet
what are you to do?

I lie unanchored and unready to swim.

And so, I must fit a million memories
into cardboard quadrants
Their many folds

and creases
controlling the tide
as I navigate through
changing dimensions.

Sounds of youth haunt the now
empty hallways
breathing colours hang
in the static chill
concealing

the indelible years.

About This Poem

The poem is inspired by the conflicting feeling behind having to move out of your childhood home. As soon as this news was broke to me I knew that I wanted to capture my emotions, which were of a confusing and paradoxical nature. The poem uses vivid colour symbolism and purposeful imagery to construct an image of abandonment, fears and comfort. The words "not" and "knot" serve as the core elements of the poem, through clever word play that reveals the true meaning behind a home and its emotional connection respectively. The "knot" metaphor quite literally works as the heart of the poem, representing a deep connection to childhood through a home. As the poem progresses the knot unfolds and the tone shifts, mirroring my real life experience. In the poem I aimed to tell 2 sides of a story and pack as much narration into the page as possible.
Additionally, structural aspects have many thematic purposes. Each line's shape, form, and position on the page are totally intentional. I always knew when beginning to write the poem that I wanted what once felt stable and equal (i.e the sestets in the first half) to turn into something fragmented and unsettling (i.e the totally unstable structure in the second half). This allows the reader to connect with emotional disorder and feel the message of the poem through the actual appearance of the poem. Enjambment plays a crucial rule, such as reflecting the "folds and creases" by literally folding into the next line, and the isolation of the line "empty hallways" exemplifying its significance.

Analysis Available

The poem explores the themes of memory, home, and the passage of time through a vivid depiction of a house that transcends its physical form. It artfully conveys the emotional weight of leaving behind a cherished space, using rich imagery and a reflective tone.

Strengths

  • The poem uses evocative imagery, such as 'the carpet on which little feet sprouted,' to create a vivid sense of nostalgia and personal history.
  • The metaphor of the heart as a 'knot' that 'wraps around in a perfect stream of art' effectively conveys the complexity of emotions tied to the concept of home.
  • The juxtaposition of stability and chaos is skillfully portrayed through lines like 'as water bursts from what’s now frigid and hollow,' highlighting the emotional upheaval of leaving a familiar space.

Areas for Improvement

  • The line 'I lie unanchored and unready to swim' feels somewhat abrupt and disrupts the poem's otherwise smooth flow.
  • The phrase 'changing dimensions' is somewhat vague and could benefit from more specific imagery to enhance its impact.

Imagery

The poem is rich in visual and sensory imagery, using metaphors like 'memory insulation' and 'sparking, sacred fabric' to convey the intangible essence of home. The sensory details, such as 'thick, warm rushes' of blood and 'breathing colours,' evoke a deep emotional connection to the physical space. The imagery of 'cardboard quadrants' and 'empty hallways' effectively captures the sense of loss and transition.

Structure

The poem's free verse structure allows for a fluid exploration of its themes, with line breaks and stanza organization that emphasize key emotional moments. The lack of a consistent rhyme scheme reflects the unpredictability of memory and change. The use of enjambment, particularly in lines like 'as water bursts / from what’s now frigid and hollow,' creates a sense of urgency and movement.

Language & Craft

The diction is carefully chosen to evoke a sense of nostalgia, with words like 'haven,' 'sacred,' and 'indelible' adding to the poem's reflective tone. The use of alliteration in 'sparking, sacred fabric' and assonance in 'frail heart' enhances the musical quality of the language. The tone is contemplative and introspective, inviting the reader to reflect on their own experiences of home and memory.

Emotional Impact

The poem successfully captures the bittersweet nature of leaving a beloved home, resonating with readers who have experienced similar transitions. Its emotional depth is conveyed through the interplay of vivid imagery and reflective language, creating a poignant and lasting impression.
