What Is Alive

Inspirational / Motivational Poetry Human Written by Sara Prete ·
Image for What Is Alive

Wearing a mask to hide the truth?
Hoping it serves a noble purpose?
An adventure, perhaps an experience?
Twisting paths, merging?

It truly is THE question, is it not?
So let us answer it,

A labyrinth of trials for us to face,
Love and fierce agony, woven in place,
Igniting wild sparks where distant souls meet,
Vibrant thoughts rushing from heart to beat,
Exuberant spirits refusing to bow,

This is being wholly alive.

Poem Analysis

This analysis is provided as optional literary feedback. Community voting remains the primary ranking method.

Analysis Available

The poem explores themes of identity, existential inquiry, and the complexities of human emotion through a series of rhetorical questions and vivid imagery. It offers a contemplative journey into the human experience, though its structure and language may lack cohesion and depth.

Strengths

  • The poem effectively uses rhetorical questions to engage the reader, as seen in the opening lines 'Wearing a mask to hide the truth? / Hoping it serves a noble purpose?'
  • Imagery of 'a labyrinth of trials' and 'vibrant thoughts rushing from heart to beat' provides a dynamic sense of movement and emotional intensity.
  • The line 'Exuberant spirits refusing to bow' conveys a strong sense of resilience and vitality.

Areas for Improvement

  • The poem lacks a clear structural form, with abrupt transitions between ideas, such as between the initial questions and the subsequent exploration of trials and emotions.
  • The phrase 'It truly is THE question, is it not?' feels clichéd and does not contribute new insight into the thematic exploration.

Imagery

The poem employs vivid imagery to convey the emotional landscape of its themes. The metaphor of a 'labyrinth of trials' suggests complexity and challenge, while 'wild sparks where distant souls meet' evokes a sense of unexpected connection and passion. The use of 'vibrant thoughts rushing from heart to beat' effectively captures the intensity of emotional experience, though the imagery could be more consistently developed throughout the poem.

Structure

The poem lacks a consistent structural form, with no discernible meter or rhyme scheme. The use of rhetorical questions at the beginning sets an inquisitive tone, but the transition to a more descriptive and abstract exploration of emotions is abrupt. The poem concludes with a single line, 'This is being wholly alive,' which attempts to encapsulate the preceding ideas but feels disconnected due to the lack of structural cohesion.

Language & Craft

The diction is straightforward, with moments of vivid language, such as 'igniting wild sparks' and 'exuberant spirits.' However, the tone shifts from introspective to declarative without a clear transition, which affects the overall coherence. The use of alliteration in 'fierce agony' and 'vibrant thoughts' adds a musical quality, though such devices are not consistently employed.

Emotional Impact

The poem has moments of emotional resonance, particularly in its depiction of resilience and the search for meaning. However, the emotional depth is somewhat undermined by the lack of structural and thematic cohesion, which may limit its ability to fully move the reader.
