where the road ends

Image for where the road ends

I am lost in my thoughts,
I have nowhere else to go.
And now the sky meets the land,
I am in between the edge of the fire.

I have my hands twisted,
All my potential wasted,
All my papers tested,
All my sentences were buried.

A love I gave out on the horizon,
Casting light into my shadows.
What I once saw was marigold,
Turned rusted as I leave the door.

This is where the road ends,
A love full of amends.
The car ran out of diesel,
And my heart died out of drought.

About This Poem

This is the final poem from my 12th poetry album, "end isn't something I like" where I came down a journey of sad love poems.

This was inspired from my former relationship. That relationship was everything I wanted but turned out to be just another heartbreak.

I first wrote this poem in a form of love but I had to change the theme to fit the poetry album.

Poem Analysis

This analysis is provided as optional literary feedback. Community voting remains the primary ranking method.

Analysis Available

The poem explores themes of loss, potential unfulfilled, and the end of a journey, using a blend of personal introspection and metaphorical imagery. It captures a sense of melancholy and resignation with a few striking images but lacks cohesion in its thematic development.

Strengths

  • The poem effectively uses metaphorical language, such as 'the sky meets the land' and 'edge of the fire,' to evoke a sense of being at a crossroads.
  • The imagery of 'a love I gave out on the horizon' and 'casting light into my shadows' provides a vivid contrast between hope and despair.
  • The line 'All my sentences were buried' poignantly captures the sense of lost potential and silenced expression.

Areas for Improvement

  • The poem lacks a clear structural progression, with abrupt shifts in imagery and themes, such as moving from personal introspection to a car running out of diesel.
  • Certain lines, like 'And my heart died out of drought,' feel clichéd and do not contribute to the poem's originality or depth.

Imagery

The poem uses visual and metaphorical imagery to convey its themes. The juxtaposition of 'the sky meets the land' and 'edge of the fire' paints a picture of being caught between two worlds. The transformation of 'marigold' to 'rusted' symbolizes the decay of something once vibrant. However, some imagery, such as 'the car ran out of diesel,' while vivid, feels disconnected from the rest of the poem's emotional landscape.

Structure

The poem lacks a consistent form or meter, which contributes to its disjointed feel. It is composed of four stanzas of varying lengths, with no discernible rhyme scheme. This irregular structure mirrors the poem's themes of uncertainty and unresolved tension but also detracts from its overall cohesion.

Language & Craft

The diction is straightforward, with occasional moments of lyrical quality, such as 'casting light into my shadows.' The tone is consistently somber, reflecting the speaker's introspection and sense of loss. However, the language sometimes slips into cliché, which undermines the poem's emotional impact.

Emotional Impact

The poem evokes a sense of melancholy and resignation, with moments that resonate emotionally, such as the buried potential and the extinguished love. However, the lack of thematic cohesion and reliance on some clichéd expressions limit its overall emotional depth.
