The Eternal Dance

I don't understand,
The world around me,
I just get confused,
By the people I see.

A constant battle – with my sound,
A constant rivalry – between two minds,
I am drowning in this desert of emptiness ,
How do I fit in this world which seems so complex to me.

Every wrong step –
Something in me goes,
Drifting through time,
Is this life really meant to be mine.

I look around the room trying to understand,
Everyone else seems to know when to make their sound,
I get a thought, an idea but then,
My mind goes blank like an empty page,
Too many voices – stacked, colliding into one.

Looking deep into the mirror of possibilities,
But nothing,
The mirror twists me into something I don't recognise and laughs,
You will be nothing but a burden to this world.

My dance becomes weak,
My sound becomes quiet,
I bleed to know I’m alive.
The world doesn't get me,
You're a square in a room full of circles.

This isn't the choreography I was meant to follow.
I have stood in the flames that burnt my brain,
I have suffered the consequences,
Tracing old scars like a half-faded mark,
This is where I’ve been.

Age taught me: no winners or losers in this war -
Only victims, only students.
I stood face to face with the beast refusing to cower,
I became the rhythm you find when your steps fall apart.

My mirror will fill with possibilities,
The battle was never meant for me to win, it was an eternal dance,
With every clumsy footstep, every wrong step I would lose a part of me,
I learnt to relax and soften,
Then the dance got easier.

I don't understand,
The world around me,
I am dancing down a complex road - unapologetically me,
I am a square in a world of circles -
And still, I dance it my way.

About This Poem

I have autism I was diagnosed late in my life I've always known I was different I thought there was something wrong with me. I could never fit in with kids at school, I was never quite right. This led to my battles with my mental health which I see as an eternal dance with no teachers, no students only victims. This battle I am still facing to learn to be content within myself and let my mind rest. I will win this dance one day then I will look back on everyone who told me I can't and prove to them I can.

Analysis Available

The poem 'The Eternal Dance' explores themes of identity, alienation, and self-acceptance through a metaphor of dance. It captures the internal struggle of feeling out of place in a complex world, ultimately finding solace in embracing one's uniqueness. The poem's merit lies in its emotional depth and the relatable journey of self-discovery.

Strengths

  • The use of dance as a metaphor for navigating life's complexities is compelling and relatable, as seen in lines like 'My dance becomes weak, / My sound becomes quiet.'
  • The poem effectively conveys a sense of internal conflict and growth, particularly in 'I became the rhythm you find when your steps fall apart.'
  • The progression from confusion to acceptance is well-articulated, culminating in the empowering declaration 'I am dancing down a complex road - unapologetically me.'

Areas for Improvement

  • The poem occasionally relies on clichés, such as 'I bleed to know I’m alive,' which can detract from its originality.
  • Some imagery, like 'drowning in this desert of emptiness,' feels contradictory and may confuse rather than clarify the intended emotion.

Imagery

The poem employs vivid imagery to illustrate the speaker's internal struggle and journey. The metaphor of dance is central, representing the speaker's attempts to navigate life and find their place. The 'mirror of possibilities' is a powerful image that reflects self-doubt and transformation. However, some images, like 'drowning in this desert of emptiness,' mix metaphors in a way that can be disorienting. Overall, the imagery effectively conveys the emotional landscape of the poem.

Structure

The poem is free verse, lacking a consistent rhyme scheme or meter, which mirrors the speaker's chaotic and unpredictable journey. Line breaks and stanza organization emphasize moments of introspection and realization, such as the shift from confusion to acceptance in the final stanzas. The structure supports the theme of finding one's rhythm amidst disorder.

Language & Craft

The diction is straightforward, with moments of poetic flourish, such as 'tracing old scars like a half-faded mark.' The tone shifts from confusion and despair to resilience and acceptance, supported by the use of repetition in phrases like 'I don't understand.' The voice is introspective and candid, inviting readers into the speaker's internal world.

Emotional Impact

The poem resonates emotionally by capturing the universal experience of feeling out of place and the journey towards self-acceptance. The speaker's vulnerability and eventual empowerment are moving, particularly in the concluding lines that affirm their unique identity. The emotional depth is a key strength, making the poem relatable and impactful.
