Free Bird

Free Bird

Two birds once rested on a wire
Dove whistled truth; Crow sang like a liar
Though growing weak and deeply tired
She kept alive his dying fire

Dove thought Crow stayed because he cared
Believing that hidden love was there
But Crow just kept her close and near
Near enough to disappear

He pulled her close, then stepped away
Yet begged her softly, “Please, just stay.”
He gave her crumbs and called them signs
She made a feast from empty lines

Each time poor Dove prepared to leave
Crow gave her something to believe
Not enough love to make her stay
But enough hope to make her decay

Dove gave Crow every reason to choose her
While Crow gave Dove every reason to leave
She built a nest and dreamed for two
While Crow just waited to be through

Dove left behind the empty wire
No longer feeding Crow’s cold fire
Though bruised, afraid and growing tired
She found her wings and still flew higher.

About This Poem

I wrote the poem 'Free Bird' because it carries a very personal experience with someone I deeply cared for. My poem is mostly about loving someone who kept me for a long time close enough to have hope, but never close enough to truly feel chosen. I also included lines to symbolize that there were moment that I (Dove) felt like there was something real between us... Whenever I finally tried to go, I was given enough hope to make me stay a little bit longer.

I chose to represent Dove as myself because in this instance the dove represents love, fidelity, purity and innocence. While I chose the guy that I finally left as Crow because a crow normally represents death, bad luck, and misfortune.

Dove represents the part of me that kept believing love could grow if I was patient enough, by giving up my happiness. While Crow represents someone who may have cared in his own way, but could never give me the certainty and love I was waiting for through out live. (on that wire) I kept starting

I kept turning small gestures into reasons to stay because admitting that they might mean nothing was more painful than holding onto the possibility that one day he would choose me.

The poem is also about how exhausting it becomes to love someone in uncertainty. Sometimes hope is not always beautiful but rather the thing that can keep you trapped. The ending represents something that I am still learning: leaving does not mean that the love was never real. Sometimes you can love a person deeply and still realize that staying is hurting you.

Dove flying away is not about suddenly forgetting Crow or becoming completely healed but rather it is about finally choosing herself... even while she is still bruised, hurt and tired. She leaves because she finally understands that love should not require her to slowly disappear.

Analysis Available

The poem 'Free Bird' explores themes of unrequited love and emotional manipulation through the allegory of a Dove and a Crow. It effectively uses avian imagery to depict the dynamics of a toxic relationship, showcasing a strong narrative arc and emotional depth.

Strengths

  • The poem uses strong allegorical imagery with the Dove and Crow, effectively illustrating the dynamics of the relationship (e.g., 'Dove whistled truth; Crow sang like a liar').
  • The narrative arc is well-developed, showing the Dove's journey from hope to realization and eventual liberation ('She found her wings and still flew higher').
  • The poem's emotional depth is palpable, capturing the Dove's internal struggle and growth ('Not enough love to make her stay / But enough hope to make her decay').

Areas for Improvement

  • The rhyme scheme, while consistent, can feel predictable and may detract from the poem's emotional complexity ('He pulled her close, then stepped away / Yet begged her softly, “Please, just stay.”').
  • Some of the language is overly simplistic, which might limit the poem's potential for deeper metaphorical exploration ('He gave her crumbs and called them signs').

Imagery

The poem employs vivid avian imagery to symbolize the characters' traits and relationship dynamics. The Dove represents innocence and hope, while the Crow symbolizes deceit and manipulation. The imagery of 'Dove whistled truth; Crow sang like a liar' contrasts their natures, and 'She found her wings and still flew higher' powerfully conveys the Dove's eventual liberation.

Structure

The poem is structured in quatrains with an AABB rhyme scheme, which provides a rhythmic consistency. This structure supports the narrative progression from entrapment to freedom. The line breaks emphasize the tension and release in the Dove's journey, particularly in the final stanza where the Dove's liberation is highlighted.

Language & Craft

The diction is straightforward, with a conversational tone that makes the poem accessible. The use of repetition, as in 'Crow gave Dove every reason to leave,' reinforces the central conflict. Alliteration, such as 'Dove dreamed,' adds a lyrical quality, while the contrast between 'truth' and 'liar' sharpens the thematic tension.

Emotional Impact

The poem effectively captures the emotional turmoil of an imbalanced relationship, resonating with readers through its portrayal of hope, disillusionment, and eventual empowerment. The Dove's journey from dependency to independence is emotionally compelling, particularly in the concluding lines where her resilience is celebrated.
