coming winter

Image for coming winter

Nothing at all
has really happened again
I hate that I feel on the brink
of tears at best and
nothing at all at worst.
I've thought about it
forever and it really is the worst
it feels the worst, looks the worst, tastes and stays
the worst. Melodramaticness I avoid or
at least think I do. What can
I do but ride it out, I know how to
do that
I dont want to i dont want to i dont want to again
again again I
disappear into the carpet

About This Poem

My struggles with this dreadful period that has kept coming back to me my whole life and my inability to do anything about it or explain it clearly.

Poem Analysis

This analysis is provided as optional literary feedback. Community voting remains the primary ranking method.

Analysis Available

The poem captures a sense of emotional stagnation and despair through a repetitive and introspective narrative. Its artistic value lies in its raw portrayal of internal conflict, though it lacks the refinement of more polished works.

Strengths

  • The poem effectively conveys a sense of emotional paralysis with lines like 'Nothing at all has really happened again' and 'I hate that I feel on the brink of tears.'
  • The repetition of 'i dont want to i dont want to i dont want to again again again' powerfully underscores the speaker's sense of helplessness and frustration.
  • The closing image 'disappear into the carpet' is a poignant metaphor for the speaker's desire to vanish or escape their emotional state.

Areas for Improvement

  • The poem's language is somewhat repetitive and lacks variety, as seen in the frequent use of 'the worst' which diminishes its impact.
  • The lack of punctuation and capitalization in places like 'i dont want to i dont want to i dont want to' can make the poem feel less polished and harder to follow.

Imagery

The poem uses simple yet effective imagery to convey its themes. The phrase 'disappear into the carpet' serves as a metaphor for the speaker's wish to become invisible or insignificant, suggesting a deep sense of despair. However, the visual and sensory details are sparse, relying more on emotional repetition than vivid imagery.

Structure

The poem lacks a formal structure, with free verse and irregular line breaks that reflect the speaker's turbulent emotional state. The absence of a consistent meter or rhyme scheme contributes to the sense of disarray and mirrors the theme of emotional chaos.

Language & Craft

The diction is straightforward and colloquial, which suits the poem's confessional tone. The repetition of phrases like 'the worst' and 'i dont want to' emphasizes the speaker's mental loop of negativity. However, the lack of varied linguistic techniques such as alliteration or assonance limits the poem's musicality.

Emotional Impact

The poem's emotional impact is grounded in its raw honesty and the speaker's palpable sense of frustration and despair. While it successfully evokes empathy, its repetitive nature may limit the depth of its emotional resonance for some readers.
