Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Contemporary / Modern Poetry Human Written by T. Walker ·

Who will you be today?
What will you decide?
The good doctor, kind, sweet and fair.
The other man careless and unaware

The Doctor with the power to heal,
the power to quiet my mind,
the power to make me feel divine,
the power to keep me safe,
And the love you give is unreal.

The other man looks so much like you
He smells just like you
He sounds just like you
But I look in his eyes I know it's not you.
He seems to enjoy the pain in my heart
My feelings His to crush and destroy
My tears nourish His soul
He does not hit
Only yells
He bulldozes confidence
Despises the insecurity He has perfectly crafted

Who will you be today?
What will you decide?
The good doctor, kind, sweet and fair.
The other man careless and unaware

The Doctor comes and fixes.
The Doctor brings hugs, love, and kisses.
The Doctor listens and provides.
The Doctor looks so much like Hyde.

The Doctor visits less and less
My insurance is no longer accepted at His office
I beg and plead for The Doctor to stay
The Doctor tells me he never goes away.
Then He is there in the same moment, telling me the doctor is tired
Burned-out and exhausted by the workload
He tells me it's too much to provide such care
He lets me know He is not going anywhere.

Who will you be today?
What will you decide?
Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde

I wonder if I would fare better as Frankestine’s Bride.

About This Poem

The original story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a beautiful allegory of the duality of man and public perception versus the true self. I thought about how this idea is applied in a relationship with a partner who seems ever-changing. What does a modern-day Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde look like in a relationship?

This analysis is provided as optional literary feedback. Community voting remains the primary ranking method.

Analysis Available

The poem explores the duality of human nature through the lens of a character resembling Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It effectively captures the struggle between benevolence and malevolence within a single individual, though it occasionally lacks depth in its exploration of this theme.

Strengths

  • The poem effectively uses the duality motif, as seen in 'Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde,' to explore complex human emotions.
  • The repetition of 'Who will you be today? What will you decide?' creates a rhythmic structure that underscores the theme of choice and identity.
  • The line 'The Doctor looks so much like Hyde' cleverly alludes to the classic literary reference, enriching the poem's thematic depth.

Areas for Improvement

  • The poem's imagery can be inconsistent, with lines like 'He bulldozes confidence' lacking the subtlety found elsewhere.
  • The ending reference to 'Frankestine’s Bride' feels abrupt and disconnected from the established narrative, detracting from the poem's cohesion.

Imagery

The poem employs vivid imagery to contrast the two personas, such as 'The Doctor with the power to heal' versus 'The other man looks so much like you.' However, some metaphors, like 'My tears nourish His soul,' are more evocative than others, which can feel blunt or underdeveloped.

Structure

The poem uses a free verse structure with irregular line lengths and no consistent rhyme scheme, which mirrors the unpredictability of the personas. The repeated refrain 'Who will you be today? What will you decide?' acts as a structural anchor, reinforcing the central theme.

Language & Craft

The diction is straightforward, with a conversational tone that makes the poem accessible. The use of capitalization for 'The Doctor' and 'The other man' personifies these roles, adding a layer of complexity. However, the language occasionally lacks the nuance needed for deeper emotional impact.

Emotional Impact

The poem's exploration of duality and internal conflict carries an emotional weight, particularly in its depiction of vulnerability and longing. However, the emotional resonance is somewhat diluted by the lack of subtlety in certain sections, which can make the narrative feel less impactful.
