The Dream Not Followed

If life is a lock,
Education is the key.
Or so you may think.
As you realize too late,
This key sealed your fate.

One small error,
Or an unexpected blunder.
That’s all it takes.
All those years of work and pain
Go right down the college drain.

“We raised you with love and care,
And this is what you give us?!”
Your parents say in unison.
But you, in your mind you scream,
When did they support your dream?

Then, reality hits with force,
And so, you mutter to yourself:
“Did I really want to do this?”
All these years, you weren’t living,
Just doing all your parents’ bidding.

If education was the key,
Your dream was the locksmith.
There were many possibilities,
But you chose the one you detested,
And so, your efforts were wasted.

Your life is like a piece of clay,
You can shape it however you want,
Up to a certain extent.
As once the clay is fired
You are either rejected or hired.

Everyone shall say,
“Following your dreams is risky”,
Which is far from the truth.
Because if you have to live in strife,
What’s the point of living life?

Analysis Available

The poem 'The Dream Not Followed' explores the tension between societal expectations and personal aspirations, using the metaphor of education as a key that locks one into a predetermined fate. While it presents a compelling narrative on the consequences of not pursuing one's dreams, its artistic execution is somewhat uneven, with moments of insight but also instances of clichéd expressions.

Strengths

  • The metaphor of education as a key that 'sealed your fate' effectively conveys the poem's central theme (line 5).
  • The poem captures the emotional turmoil of unmet parental expectations, particularly in the lines 'We raised you with love and care, / And this is what you give us?!' (lines 10-11).
  • The imagery of life as 'a piece of clay' that can be shaped but becomes fixed once fired is a powerful metaphor for the consequences of life choices (lines 23-25).

Areas for Improvement

  • The phrase 'college drain' feels clichéd and lacks the nuance present in other parts of the poem (line 9).
  • The poem's rhetorical questions, such as 'Did I really want to do this?' (line 15), are somewhat predictable and could be more creatively expressed.

Imagery

The poem employs vivid imagery, particularly with the metaphor of life as 'a piece of clay' that can be shaped but becomes fixed once fired. This metaphor effectively illustrates the permanence of life choices. However, other images, like the 'college drain,' lack originality and weaken the overall impact. The metaphor of education as a key is woven throughout the poem, reinforcing the theme of constrained potential.

Structure

The poem is structured in free verse with no consistent rhyme scheme, which reflects the chaotic and unpredictable nature of the speaker's experience. The line breaks often emphasize key moments of realization, such as 'This key sealed your fate.' The stanza organization follows a logical progression from initial disillusionment to self-reflection, culminating in a broader philosophical question.

Language & Craft

The diction is straightforward and accessible, which makes the poem relatable but occasionally veers into the realm of cliché. The tone is reflective and slightly accusatory, capturing the speaker's frustration with societal and familial pressures. There is a notable use of repetition in phrases like 'your dream was the locksmith,' which underscores the poem's central conflict.

Emotional Impact

The poem effectively conveys the emotional struggle of reconciling personal desires with external expectations, resonating with readers who have faced similar dilemmas. However, the emotional impact is somewhat diminished by predictable expressions and a lack of innovative language, which could have deepened the reader's engagement.
