Falling Leaves, Fading Dreams
By: Thomas Arena
Falling leaves, like fading dreams
Something fleeting in the season
Something forlorn. Beauty, yes
But also, sorrow
A time of mourning
A season of loss
Summer overstays its welcome
And winter comes too soon
Radiant hues, then death
Woodsmoke, cool breezes
Then darkness and cold
As the light steadily fades
And the days begin to wither
I can’t help but wonder
If this is all we are
All we ever were
Leaves, falling
A bright summer blaze
Colors in dreamlike haze
Then gone, leaving just
Husks in the wind, skittering
Skeletal branches, rattling
The light will return
But as Autumn falls
It seems so far away
Walk the path, breathe it in
Nothing is forever
All things come and go
Echoes, lost to the past
Shades, never meant to last
We are the same as the leaves
That I watch as I walk
Falling, like hearts
Fading, like dreams
Walk the path
Breathe it in
The light will come again
