About This Poem

This is my first Sanskrit Poem , I wrote it for a college poetry competition in my first year of college. This poem tries to reflect on what anger means for a person. After reading the poem , you may refer to its English equivalent also written as a poem.
A tale of Anger

Like a bitter fruit,
Is people's anger at its root.
As harsh as a crow's voice an angry man speaks,
Attacks the other person's ear like a thorny rose tweaks.
Anger is like a guest uninvited,
Stays for a time unwanted.
One of the reasons anger stays like a hook,
Is the mistake that we often overlook.
Anger is capable of breaking a life-long relation,
Which can never be reversed with any medication.
When one realises one's mistake,in anger with oneself,
The person can make or break.
But when the anger is against a wrong cause or cruelty,
It has the potential to change the mentality of the society.
Hence anger is always a choice,
And not anyone's final voice.

Analysis Available

The poem 'क्रोधस्य चरितं' explores the multifaceted nature of anger, likening it to an unwelcome guest and a thorny rose. It offers a reflective meditation on the destructive potential of anger and its role in societal change, presenting a balanced view of anger as both a catalyst and a peril.

Strengths

  • The metaphor of anger as a 'कटु मधः इव' (bitter honey) in the first line effectively captures its dual nature.
  • The imagery of a 'कणटकयुक्तं गुलाबं' (thorny rose) conveys the beauty and danger of anger.
  • The poem's thematic exploration of anger as both a personal and societal force is thought-provoking.

Areas for Improvement

  • The poem's language can be somewhat abstract, as seen in 'स्व अदृश्य दोषः', which may obscure meaning.
  • The structure lacks variation, with each stanza following a similar format, which can limit the poem's dynamism.

Imagery

The poem employs vivid imagery, such as comparing anger to a 'thorny rose' and 'bitter honey,' which effectively conveys its dual nature of allure and danger. The use of 'काकस्वरः' (crow's voice) to describe how anger affects speech is a striking auditory image that underscores the harshness of anger.

Structure

The poem consists of four stanzas, each with a consistent structure that mirrors the thematic exploration of anger. The lack of a specific rhyme scheme or meter suggests a free verse form, allowing for a fluid exploration of ideas without being constrained by formal limitations.

Language & Craft

The diction is formal and philosophical, with a tone that is reflective and analytical. The use of Sanskrit terms like 'अस्वागतमय अतिथी' (unwelcome guest) adds a layer of cultural depth, while the repetition of 'क्रोधः' (anger) emphasizes its centrality to the poem's theme.

Emotional Impact

The poem's emotional impact lies in its contemplative nature, prompting readers to reflect on their own experiences with anger. While it may not evoke strong immediate emotions, its philosophical depth encourages introspection and a reconsideration of anger's role in personal and societal contexts.
