Summer Days

Image for Summer Days

I never talked about how I struggle to write, how I express words out of my mind, or how I hardly view the world as bright.

I remember when I was 5, when I used to buy candies on my way home, now sweets are sour, and sour is numb.

I remember going to my grandma’s house, having sleepovers with my cousins as we all slept under the A/C, it was fun till it lasted, oh but now these memories are hazy.

I remember our summer days as we were running to the beach, playing in the sand, these sounds are now in my head now they screech.
the laughter all around filling the summer air, I would’ve done anything for these moments to spare.

I will never be 5, 10 or 15 again, but these days will forever haunt my being , and hit me on random days like a running train.

Analysis Available

The poem is a reflective exploration of nostalgia and the passage of time, capturing the bittersweet nature of memories. It effectively conveys a sense of longing and loss through personal anecdotes and vivid imagery, though it occasionally struggles with maintaining a consistent tone.

Strengths

  • The poem effectively uses personal memories to evoke a universal sense of nostalgia, as seen in lines like 'I remember going to my grandma’s house, having sleepovers with my cousins.'
  • The imagery of childhood, such as 'buy candies on my way home,' creates a vivid contrast between past joys and present melancholy.
  • The poem captures the inevitability of time's passage with poignant lines like 'I will never be 5, 10 or 15 again.'

Areas for Improvement

  • The poem's tone is somewhat inconsistent, shifting abruptly from nostalgic to melancholic without smooth transitions, particularly evident in the line 'now sweets are sour, and sour is numb.'
  • The repetition of certain phrases, such as 'now in my head now they screech,' can detract from the overall flow and impact.

Imagery

The poem utilizes strong visual imagery to evoke the innocence of childhood, such as 'playing in the sand' and 'the laughter all around filling the summer air.' These images effectively contrast with the present sense of loss. Metaphors like 'these days will forever haunt my being' convey the lingering impact of past experiences. However, the imagery occasionally lacks cohesion, with some lines feeling disjointed.

Structure

The poem is written in free verse, lacking a consistent rhyme scheme or meter, which suits its reflective and personal nature. However, the line breaks and stanza organization could be more deliberate to enhance the emotional pacing. The poem's structure mirrors the fragmented nature of memory but could benefit from more intentional organization to strengthen its impact.

Language & Craft

The diction is straightforward and conversational, which makes the poem accessible but sometimes limits its lyrical quality. The use of repetition in phrases like 'I remember' reinforces the theme of nostalgia. There is occasional alliteration, such as 'sweets are sour,' which adds a subtle musicality. Overall, the language is effective but could be more varied to enhance the poem's emotional depth.

Emotional Impact

The poem succeeds in evoking a sense of nostalgia and the bittersweet nature of growing up. The personal anecdotes create an emotional connection with the reader, though the impact is sometimes lessened by abrupt tonal shifts. The poem's conclusion, with its metaphor of a 'running train,' leaves a lasting impression of the relentless passage of time.
