Love

Contemporary / Modern Poetry Human Written by Poppi Conklin ·
Image for Love

love is patient
love is kind
but i feel like love is a waste of time

it does not envy
it does not boast
but to find it, i've travelled coast to coast

it is not proud.
and the worry it won't find me is getting so loud

it does not dishonor others
it is not self-seeking
but all i've had is quick and fleeting

it is not easily angered
it keeps no record of wrongs.
but if i can't find it, what did i do wrong?

Analysis Available

The poem explores the dichotomy between the idealized qualities of love and the speaker's personal disillusionment with it. Despite its simplicity, the poem effectively conveys a sense of longing and frustration, juxtaposing traditional definitions of love with the speaker's own experiences.

Strengths

  • The poem effectively uses repetition of 'it does not' to emphasize the contrast between ideal love and personal experience (lines 4, 8, 11, 14).
  • The poem captures a relatable emotional struggle, particularly in the line 'and the worry it won't find me is getting so loud' (line 9).
  • The use of a conversational tone makes the poem accessible and engaging, drawing readers into the speaker's internal conflict.

Areas for Improvement

  • The poem lacks varied imagery, relying heavily on abstract concepts without providing concrete visual details (e.g., 'love is patient, love is kind').
  • The rhyme scheme is inconsistent, which may disrupt the flow and cohesion of the poem (e.g., lines 3 and 6 do not rhyme).

Imagery

The poem predominantly uses abstract language to discuss love, with very little in terms of sensory details or vivid imagery. The metaphors used are more conceptual than visual, focusing on the qualities of love rather than painting a picture. The line 'i've travelled coast to coast' offers a hint of imagery but remains vague and lacks specificity.

Structure

The poem is structured in a series of couplets, with an attempt at rhyme that is not consistently maintained. The line breaks often coincide with the end of a thought or statement, contributing to a straightforward, albeit somewhat disjointed, reading experience. The lack of a consistent meter or rhyme scheme may detract from the poem's musicality.

Language & Craft

The diction is simple and direct, employing a plainspoken voice that enhances the poem's sincerity. There is a notable use of repetition, particularly with the phrase 'it does not,' which serves to underscore the contrast between ideal love and the speaker's reality. However, the poem could benefit from more varied linguistic techniques, such as alliteration or assonance, to enrich its texture.

Emotional Impact

The poem successfully conveys a sense of yearning and frustration, resonating with readers who have experienced similar disillusionment with love. The speaker's candid expression of doubt and introspection invites empathy, though the lack of vivid imagery may limit the depth of emotional engagement.
