Spilled Coffee

spilled coffee on your shirt
from the first day we met
a reminder of the first burn
in a sea of pain endless

raindrops soak into our skin
as the world narrows to us
as all the reminders come falling in
we died long ago, but alive stayed the love

scatter my bones across the sky
a remorseful reality for two
right now, it's just you and i
and the things we've yet to say or do

so, tell me what you meant
with your millions of forevers
was it just for time unspent?
or was it just to sound clever?

when someone knows each word you speak
before you can even speak it
then how will life feel fun and unique
and worth coming to terms with?

i stare into your crystal eyes
my heart doesn't remember what you did
it beats like you never once lied
and fills my face with red

that coffee stain, that red hot burn
that once was touched with fondness
is now a sensation for which i yearn
as i sit alone in darkness

the shower pours against my skin
you're not in front of me
i cannot bear to make you the villain
when that stain is all i see

your love was cruel, your tongue was crueler
your heart was good, once
and when i remember how you grew cooler
i know what's done is done

but if what's done is done, then why do i still dwell?
your memory is glass, it's fragile
and with it i taste heaven before awakening in hell.

This analysis is provided as optional literary feedback. Community voting remains the primary ranking method.

Analysis Available

The poem explores themes of love, memory, and regret through vivid imagery and emotional introspection. It effectively captures the paradox of longing for a past relationship while grappling with its painful remnants, showcasing artistic merit in its emotional depth.

Strengths

  • The poem uses strong imagery, such as 'scatter my bones across the sky' and 'your memory is glass, it's fragile,' which evoke powerful visual and emotional responses.
  • The emotional depth is palpable, particularly in lines like 'your love was cruel, your tongue was crueler,' conveying complex feelings of love and betrayal.
  • The poem's exploration of time and memory, seen in 'we died long ago, but alive stayed the love,' adds a layer of philosophical reflection.

Areas for Improvement

  • The poem's structure is somewhat uneven, with varying line lengths and a lack of consistent rhyme scheme that can disrupt the flow (e.g., the transition from 'scatter my bones across the sky' to 'a remorseful reality for two').
  • Some lines, such as 'was it just to sound clever?' feel less impactful and can detract from the poem's overall emotional weight.

Imagery

The poem employs vivid imagery to convey its themes, using metaphors such as 'scatter my bones across the sky' to symbolize the speaker's sense of loss and longing. The recurring motif of the coffee stain serves as a tangible reminder of past intimacy and pain, while 'your memory is glass, it's fragile' highlights the delicate nature of memory. Sensory details, like the 'shower pours against my skin,' enhance the poem's emotional resonance by grounding abstract feelings in physical sensations.

Structure

The poem lacks a consistent structure, with irregular line lengths and an inconsistent rhyme scheme that can create a disjointed reading experience. It is composed of free verse with occasional rhyming couplets, such as 'your love was cruel, your tongue was crueler / your heart was good, once,' which adds emphasis to key emotional moments. The stanza breaks are used to shift focus between different facets of the relationship, although they sometimes feel abrupt.

Language & Craft

The poem's diction is straightforward yet evocative, employing a conversational tone that enhances its emotional authenticity. The use of rhetorical questions, such as 'was it just for time unspent?' invites the reader to engage with the speaker's introspection. Alliteration and assonance are subtly employed, as in 'scatter my bones across the sky,' to create a musical quality. The voice is intimate and reflective, drawing the reader into the speaker's internal conflict.

Emotional Impact

The poem effectively conveys a deep sense of longing and regret, resonating with readers who have experienced similar emotions. Its exploration of love's complexities, from the initial 'burn' to the enduring 'sea of pain,' creates a poignant narrative that lingers in the reader's mind. The juxtaposition of past affection with present solitude amplifies the emotional impact, making the poem both relatable and moving.
