The Queen in her palace

Image for The Queen in her palace

deflated and defeated, the queen sends
her last men
with cobalt jackets
and argent insides

they arrive by capsule: bitter and ashen.

the soldiers start another battle
with the tender inflammation
of thinking and knowing and fearing.

alone in her palace, she cherishes the throne;
crown tightly gripped
her many jewels digging into
her frail skin.
she watches and prays and hopes
that alien infirmity and clinical
nights
will not seize her power.

Analysis Available

The poem presents a vivid image of a beleaguered queen facing internal and external battles. Its artistic value lies in its rich imagery and emotional depth, though it could benefit from more structural refinement.

Strengths

  • The poem uses vivid imagery, such as 'cobalt jackets and argent insides,' to create a striking visual contrast.
  • The emotional depth is palpable, particularly in lines like 'crown tightly gripped her many jewels digging into her frail skin,' which convey vulnerability.
  • The metaphor of the 'alien infirmity and clinical nights' effectively captures the queen's internal struggle and fear of losing power.

Areas for Improvement

  • The poem's structure lacks cohesion, with abrupt transitions between stanzas that disrupt the flow (e.g., the shift from soldiers to the queen's solitude).
  • The poem could benefit from more varied diction, as some phrases, like 'bitter and ashen,' feel clichéd and undermine the overall impact.

Imagery

The poem employs strong visual language, with metaphors like 'cobalt jackets and argent insides' suggesting both the regal and mechanical aspects of the queen's soldiers. The 'tender inflammation of thinking and knowing and fearing' provides a sensory experience that evokes the internal turmoil of battle. The imagery of the queen's jewels digging into her skin powerfully illustrates the burden of her authority.

Structure

The poem is structured in two uneven stanzas, with a lack of consistent meter or rhyme scheme. This free verse form allows for expressive freedom but results in a disjointed narrative flow. The line breaks appear intentional, emphasizing certain phrases, yet the overall organization could be more cohesive to enhance the thematic progression.

Language & Craft

The diction combines regal and clinical elements, creating a tension between majesty and vulnerability. The tone is somber and introspective, with a voice that reflects both authority and fragility. However, the use of certain phrases, such as 'bitter and ashen,' could be more original to avoid predictability. The poem lacks significant alliteration or assonance, which might have added musicality.

Emotional Impact

The poem's emotional resonance is strong, particularly in its depiction of the queen's isolation and fear. The imagery and tone effectively convey a sense of impending loss and vulnerability, inviting the reader to empathize with the queen's plight. The emotional depth is one of the poem's most compelling aspects, despite some structural weaknesses.
